This 12-inch (finished size) block contains triangle-in-a-square blocks

which can be made using traditional methods, paper foundation

piecing or an Accuquilt die. Please read all instructions before beginning.

Fabric Suggestions – It’s YOUR Quilt, choose what makes YOU happy!

Background fabric -- Solid or tone-on-tone (TOT) print

Star fabric -- solid, tone-on-tone (TOT) or multicolor print

Accent fabric -- coordinating solid or tone-on-tone (TOT)

Cutting Fabric with Rotary Cutter

• Four 4 ½-inch squares of Background fabric

• One 4 ½-inch square of Star fabric

• Eight 2 ½-inch squares of Accent fabric

• Four 4 ½-inch triangle-in-a-square units made with large triangle from Star fabric and small triangles from Background fabric using tri-rec rulers or paper-piecing pattern

• OPTIONAL - Four 3-inch squares of Accent fabric

Cutting Fabric with Accuquilt 8” Qube and Companion Angles Qube • Background fabric - Four 8” Qube Shape #1

• Star fabric – One 8” Qube Shape #1

• Accent fabric – Eight 8” Qube Shape #2

• Four triangle-in-a-square units made with large triangle from Star fabric and small triangles from Background fabric with 8” Companion Angles Qube Shapes #13 & 14 or 4” finished Triangles in a Square Die #55409

• OPTIONAL - Four 3-inch squares of Accent fabric -- 10” Qube Shape #2; or 5” Qube Shape #1; or cut 3" strips with Strip Cutter-3", then rotate 90° and sub cut into 3" squares.

Triangle-in-a-Square Notes:

You may cut the triangle-in-a-square units using an Accuquilt cutter, triangle-in-a-square rulers or by paper-piecing method. There are YouTube tutorial videos in the Additional Resources.

If you are using triangle-in-a-square rulers, you should start with a strip that is 4 ½ inches wide. Refer to the directions included in your triangle-in-a-square rulers. You may need a strip 4 ¾ inches wide.

Sewing the Block (use scant ¼” seam allowance)

1. Sew the four triangle-in-a-square units. For this block, the large triangle should be cut from the Star fabric and the two small triangles from the Background. Note that the orientation of the units is the block is such that the large triangle points AWAY from the center of the block.

2. Add the small squares to the triangle-in-a-square units.

◦ With the right sides of the fabric together, align a 2 ½” square with the bottom right edge of the sewn unit.

◦ Draw a line diagonally across the 2 ½” square. Note: you can also use an iron to press a crease diagonally across the square.

◦ Sew ON the line.

◦ Trim ¼ inch from sewn line

◦ Press seam

3. Repeat on other side. These units should measure 4 ½-inch square.

4. OPTIONAL – If you wish to add snowball corners to the outside squares, use the same technique to add a single 3” square to each of the large background squares. These units should measure 4 ½-inches square.

5. Lay out the units in a 9-patch to form the block.

6. Sew together each row of 3 units, then

sew the three rows together to form

the block.

Measurement check: each finished

Twinkle Star block should measure 12 ½

inches square to finish at 12 inches when it

is sewn into the quilt.
