9 Patch Block Instructions

OMQG Community Engagement Quilt

9 Patch Block Instructions

We will be passing out kits at the September meeting. Anyone not able to attend, please reach out to board@omahamqg.com to make arrangements to pick up or have us drop off. Each kit will have a set of instructions. Kits will be due back to us at the October meeting. Patty McArdle so graciously took a kit ahead of time and took these wonderful step by step photos for us!

Please note - there will be many blocks with not much variation at all. The center light pinks will look almost the same even though the strips are labeled differently. The outer edge is made up of the 4 darkest strips and again there will not be much variation. In this case it is most helpful to stick to the labels and not pay attention to the dark and light strip names. Make sure you do press one toward the middle and the other toward the outer strips so you are still able to nest. If you run into an envelope with a missing strip, please place all the strips back in the envelope and make a note on it and include when you turn in at the October meet.

Each kit = 1 manilla envelope.

Inside of each manilla envelope are 6 business envelopes.
It will also contain a set of instructions for piecing and pressing.
Each business envelope will contain 6 strips. 3 light strips labeled A and 3 dark strips labeled B.
You will strip piece two block sets. One set will be ABA and the second will be BAB.
For the first set sew strip A to strip B and then another A to the AB set.
Press the seams toward the darker fabric labeled B on this first set.
After pressing, cut your block into three 2" strips. Set aside.
Now onto the second set which will be arranged BAB.
Sew strip B to strip A and then the second B to the BA strip.
Press again to the dark side again. This way when we swap blocks the seams will nest.
Cut the block into three 2" strips again.
Now that you have 6 - 2" strips you will swap the middle strip in each block. This way we have 5 light squares in one block and 5 dark squares in the second.
Sew the strips together and trim to 5" unfinished.
Examples of blocks with more variation.

August, 2nd @6:30pm

Tori McElwain with The Quilt Patch by Tori will be joining us virtually to give us her program called Color Confidence for Quilters. From her site: "In this program, I demystify the sometimes intimidating task that is choosing a fabric color palette. I teach about Color Theory basics in a way that is really concrete and easy to understand, providing several "color formulas" for choosing your next palette, as well as some secret designer tricks that can instantly turn a fabric palette from dull or off to fabulous.
In addition to learning about the science of color, I teach about pattern mixing, as well as how to pull inspiration from art or nature to build a unique and beautiful color story.
With lots and lots of quilting-specific examples and tips, this program will help even the most color confused quilters gain confidence in their ability to put together an interesting palette.”

Meeting starts at 6:30 with social hour starting at 6. Westside Community Center. We will have the meeting streaming via zoom and links will go out either tomorrow or Tuesday.
Please remember to bring all your show and tells along with fabrics for One Common Thread. Please see image below for more details.

3rd Quarter Challenge - Upcycle

 3rd Quarter Challenge - Upcycle

For our 3rd quarter challenge we threw around several ideas. We actually had something entirely different chosen but we saw the Etoile Quilt Eliane of Patchwork and Poodles made where she used only upcycled materials!

From Eliane - "…… People donate to thrift stores more than they purchase from them.  ,,,if an item doesn’t sell in 4 weeks, it moves to the Goodwill Outlet…there are alot of materials to use with a fast turnaround…Good quality materials…With cost rising recently I challenge you to try making a quilt from upcycled materials and see what you think."

In alignment with Eliane - we’d like you to do the same.  Please take a few moments to read through her post for her ideas and guidelines in using upcycled materials.

For her quilt she decided to challenge herself to finding everything she'd need for her quilt in one trip to the thrift store. We have so many great thrift stores including the Goodwill Outlet which is located just south of I-80 on 72nd street. You do not have to buy anything though. Have an old sheet at home, cut it up! Great chance to make a tshirt quilt from all those shirts you have saved in the closet. Family member's old ties? Make a fun table runner! The sky is the limit with this project. There are no requirements outside of the fabric must be upcycled and the item you make needs to be quilted but does not need to be an actual quilt. Bags, hats, table runners, pillow, whatever you can dream up!

Challenge is due at our September meeting on 9/6/22.

Here are a couple other links to popular quilters who have made posts on upcycling.

June OMQG 22 BOM Block

Omaha Modern Quilt Guild

2022 BOM

#OMQG22BOM

June: Slice of Happiness

For our 2022 Block of the Month Challenge, we will be making selected parts of quilts featured  by the Modern Quilt Guild. The patterns are available for free on themodernquiltguild.com in the  member portal. Each month’s instructions will include the featured quilt, the component that  needs to be made, modi cations for the BOM, any setting strips needed, and the  nished piece  size. Cutting and assembly instructions, as well as any templates needed will be on the web site  in the original pattern. Members will end the year with an awesome quilt, a deeper dive into the resources available to MQG members, and, for some, a few new skills. The quilt is 72” x 84”.

You will construct 4 of the3/4 circle blocks using the templates and instructions provided in the pattern.  Instead of nesting two of the units together, replace the fourth quarter with a solid square in the background fabric. Each block pair will have a setting strip measuring  8.5” x 1.875” as a spacer between the blocks. (I promise,  there aren’t very many of these irregular measurements.)

Quilter: Stacey Day, Stacey Day Quilts

Finished Size for this Month’s Component: 8.5” x 36.5”

 May Meeting Recap

For our May meeting we had the incredible Cindy Erickson join us! She spoke with us on what it's like to be a quilt judge and what they look for during a show. She also shared her experience with us on being a Quilt Con judge! Her biggest takeaway when entering a quilt into Quilt Con is to make sure your quilt stands out amongst the crowd and that your pictures show how amazing it is!

Our upcoming June meeting, which will be on the 7th, Jacquie Gering will be joining us! She will also be hosting a workshop the following day based on her book Walk 2.0.
