Block Study (formerly BOM)

Omaha Modern Quilt Guild Presents:

2025 Block Study

A Block Study refers to a practice of making different variations of a single quilt block design, exploring different color combinations, fabric choices, size variations, and potential layout options for that particular block type

Each month, we will:

  • Announce a quilt block to study for the following month (check back here monthly)

  • Provide info on how to make the standard block (either via handouts or link to a youtube tutorials) & focusing on the different techniques used in making that block.

  • Showcase variations of the block made by the board to spark ideas

    • Traditional block w/ color variations

    • Modern block focused on the use of negative space

    • Improv blocks that play with size and no rulers

Join in for the year - pick a focus and make a version for all 12 blocks

Join in when you can - explore more variation within one block and make extra blocks or donate blocks to charity quilt

Not sure what to do with your block study blocks? Donate individual blocks or completed quilt top using the blocks you make each month.

  •  Colors: red, white and black - solid or tone on tone blender fabrics (prints need to read as solids)
    • suggested to match Girls Inc’s colors, but we will accept any colors
  •  Finished block size - 12” (12.5” unfinished)

2023 BOM - Stars Over Omaha

For 2023 Lynn Poly has put together a Block of the Month for us titled Stars Over Omaha. Each month we will be sharing a new Star block for you to make and by the end you will have enough to make a small throw quilt.

Fabric requirements:

Background: If you plan to make all 12 blocks for a throw size you will want at least 4 yards of background fabric. This should also give you enough for an option to add a small sashing and border if you would like. If you are unsure on how you will want to finish your quilt it is best to use something that is easy to buy more of or just buy more in advance. You could also make table runners or bags or something else out of the stars as well and not need as much fabric.

For the stars: It is estimated you will need approximately a minimum of four or five different colors for each star. A fat quarter bundle would work great as well as going scrappy.

Colorways:  Lynn is using a dark blue background with batiks for the stars.  Other ideas:  red, white and blue; or Christmas fabrics or low volume for a softer look. It would really work in any colorway you want to use.

Each block pattern will be posted to blog by the 5th of the month. All links will also be saved to this page so they will be easy to find in one spot.

2022 OMQG Block of the Month

Here is the 2022 OMQG BOM designed by our own Megan Patent-Nygren!

This year's quilt pulls sections from 12 quilts shared to members by the MQG. This year's project will build skill for newer quilters with progressively harder techniques, and give everyone a chance to dive into the MQG quilt archives.
Each moth will include a link to the original pattern in the MQG member area (so, yes, you need to pay your dues to play along) and any modifications to fit in the BOM.

I've heard a rumor there might be a guild prize at the end for the scrappiest version so feel free to take some time to organize the scrap bin and shelf of uncommitted fabrics in your stash.

If scrappy isn't your vibe, plan on 6-7 yards total. The sketches are in six value levels from white to black. Megan started with two layer cakes and three yards of a background fabric.

Share your progress with #OMQG22BOM and #SHOWUSYOURMQG.
