March 23 BOM - Stars Over Omaha - Woven Star
Woven Star

- Note: You will have triangles left over.
- Background Fabric:
- Four 12" Qube Shape #2 or 6" Qube Shape #1 Four 12" Qube Shape #4
- Fabric #1, #2, #3 & #4 - from each of these fabrics:
- Three 12" Qube Shape #5 or 6" Qube Shape #3 Two 6" Qube Shape #4
- Use scant 1/4" seam allowance.
- Construct four flying geese units, making one of each color combination. These should measure 3 1⁄2" x 61⁄2".
- Construct the four center blocks, making one of each color combination. These should measure 31⁄2" square.
- Sew together the four center blocks as shown in the diagram. This should measure 6 1/2" square.
- Lay out and sew the units together as shown in the diagram.
Measurement check: each finished Woven Star block should measure 12 1⁄2 inches square to finish at 12 inches when it is sewn into the quilt.

11.5" unfished square. Blocks are due at the April meeting. Each block you make will get you one entry toward winning the lot. If there are enough blocks to make more than one quilt, we will draw more than one winner.
Arrow side of HSTs - Medium to Dark Blues
Border and Light side of HSTs - white/low volumes
Make 4 HST’s per block that measure 4 ½” unfinished. Please use either the 4 at a time tutorial below or use the 8 and make enough for 2 blocks at once.
Border strips – 8.5” x 2” (2 qty)
11.5” x 2” (2 qty)
Layout 4 HST in the pattern below and sew together into a 4 patch block and press your seams. Attach the 8.5"x2" strips to each side and press. Attach the 11.5"x2" strips to the top and bottom and press. Trim to 11.5" unfinished.

Block Origins: Nancy Cabot published the Blazing Star block pattern in the Chicago Tribune in 1933 in her daily quilting column.
This 12-inch (finished size) block can be constructed with the Accuquilt BOB die, paper-piecing or templates. Please read all instructions before beginning.
Fabric Suggestions – It’s YOUR Quilt, choose what makes YOU happy! You need five fabrics for this block as pictured.
Background fabric -- solid or tone-on-tone (TOT) print
Medium Outer Star Points fabric – select two fabrics in with a medium value. Dark Inner Star Points fabric – select two fabrics with a darker value.
Choose your cutting method or paper piecing:
Rotary Cutter and Templates (template link)
• Background – Pieces A & AR (eight pieces)
• Cut four of each pieces A & AR
• Medium Outer Star Points – Pieces B & BR (eight pieces, four of each color) • Cut four B pieces in medium fabric #1
• Cut four BR pieces in medium fabric #2
• Dark Inner Star Points – Pieces C & CR (eight pieces, four of each color) • Cut four C pieces in dark fabric #1
• Cut four CR pieces in dark fabric #2
Accuquilt 12” Blazing Star BOB die 
• Background – Pieces A & AR (eight pieces)
• Cut four 4” x 9” rectangles. Stack rectangles in
pairs, wrong sides together.
• Sub-cut four pairs of Shape A, wrong sides
together
• Medium Outer Star Points – Pieces B & BR (eight pieces,
four of each color)
• Starch fabric for best results before cutting
• Cut two 4” x 8” rectangles each from two medium fabrics
• Sub-cut shape B with medium fabric #1 pieces stacked wrong sides up
• Sub-cut four Shape B with medium fabric #2 pieces stacked right sides up
• Dark Inner Star Points – Pieces C & CR (eight pieces, four of each color) • Cut two 4” x 10” rectangles each in two different fabrics
• Sub-cut shape B with dark fabric #1 stacked wrong sides up
• Sub-cut four Shape B with dark fabric #2 stacked right sides up
Paper Piecing Option (pattern link)
● Print 4 copies of the link above. Measure the top side of A1 to make sure it is 6" before continuing.
Sewing the Block (sewing instructions link)
1. Use scant ¼” seam allowance.
2. Construct four blocks as indicated in steps 1 – 4 of the sewing instructions. These should measure 6 ½”.
3. Lay out blocks as indicated in diagram and sew together in steps 5 – 6.
